Breastfeeding and the Billings Ovulation Method™ complement each other. Mother, father and baby all benefit.
After the birth, most women experience a period of natural infertility, prolonged for months or even years if a mother breastfeeds her baby. The Billings Ovulation Method™ enables you to recognise the months of infertility. Now you can enjoy your sexual relationship free from anxiety about the effects on your milk and your baby from the synthetic hormones found in chemical contraceptives.
Ovulation may occur before your first bleed, so it is extremely important to develop as early as possible an awareness of the mucus that signals ovulation.
In the same way, if you are not breastfeeding following the birth of your child, or have suffered a miscarriage, you can use your mucus signals to recognise the shift from infertility to possible fertility. Fertility usually returns within six weeks of the birth if your baby is not breastfed.
Your Billings Ovulation Method™ tutor will help you to interpret your pattern of infertility however long it may last while you are breastfeeding. It is likely that as your baby grows and the demand for milk changes, for example when your baby starts sleeping through the night or other food is introduced, that your Basic Infertile Pattern may change before fertility finally returns. For example you may be dry for some months, but then experience an unchanging pattern of discharge for the following months, until eventually, patches of mucus signal that fertility is returning. For some women this return of fertility may not happen until weaning is complete.
In all these circumstances your Billings Ovulation Method™ tutor is the person with the time and the expertise to help you.
