The Post-Ovulatory Infertile Phase |
In a fertile cycle menstruation will follow the Peak 11-16 days later unless there has been intercourse or genital contact during the fertile phase and conception has occurred. This interval of approximately two weeks is called the “luteal” phase.
Your Billings Ovulation Method™ tutor will explain to you that, if you do not wish to conceive, you need to wait without intercourse for three days following the Peak. This allows for the latest possible time that ovulation may occur (up to 48 hours after Peak) and for the life of the egg (maximum 24 hours). From the fourth morning past the Peak until the end of the cycle the couple is infertile – the egg is dead and there will not be another ovulation until after the beginning of the next menstruation.
During this post-ovulatory infertility you may chart days of dryness, or days of discharge, but the sensation will not again return to the slipperiness of the fertile phase. Many women will describe one or two days of wetness just before menstruation, but if you have confidently recognized the Peak you will know that this is just an indication that the cycle is nearly at an end.
It is important to remember that each cycle may not be an exact replica of the preceding one, but by keeping a chart and applying the Rules of the Billings Ovulation Method™ you will know day by day whether you are infertile or potentially fertile and the timing of ovulation. Your tutor will be able to explain to you what is happening in your body, based on what you have charted, and will assist you to gain the confidence to successfully use the Billings Ovulation Method™ at every stage throughout your reproductive life.
