After appropriate investigations your doctor may prescribe a fertility drug to assist in correcting your problems in conceiving. Commonly you may be taking one of the following: Clomiphene (Clomid) – this is a synthetic anti-oestrogen which appears to induce ovulation by stimulating the release of the Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) and Luteinising Hormone (LH). It is often used for women who wish to have a baby and whose ovulatory mechanism is inadequate. Gonadotrophins – bypass the hypothalamus and pituitary gland and substitute for the pituitary hormones FSH and LH. The effectiveness of Gonadotrophins depends on whether the ovaries are capable of being stimulated. Close medical supervision is essential, since over-stimulation of the ovaries may occur, resulting in the rapid development of large ovarian cysts, or in multiple births.
